In southeastern coastal Georgia lies Brunswick, one of the nation's most productive Atlantic ports. The county seat of Glynn County, Brunswick lies on a harbor on Oglethorpe Bay's eastern shore. This city of 16,000 is located 30 miles north of the Florida border. Its metro, the Brunswick metropolitan area, has about 102,000 residents. Brunswick was one of the five original ports of entry for the American colonies, as declared by President George Washington. The city was once "The Shrimp Capital of the World" because of the local wild shrimp which still provide a major source of income for the area.

Education
Brunswick is served by the Glynn County School System. The district has 9 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 2 high schools. The high schools are called Brunswick High and Glynn Academy, the latter being Georgia's 2nd-oldest public high school. Additionally, 4 private schools are available locally. Coastal Georgia Community College offers local postsecondary education. Education can also be found at Savannah Technical College and the local campus of Troy State University.

Recreation
Residents take pride in the Old Town residential and commercial district which has the distinction of being the largest small-town, urban Georgia district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Downtown Brunswick is also a source of pride, featuring Victorian commercial buildings and many shops and diners as well as cultural opportunities. This downtown area is currently being updated while still preserving the city's historic structures. Locals can shop at one of four major shopping centers, each with different national retail chains. Residents can enjoy the performing arts at Ritz Theatre or get in tune with the local culture at one of several annual events. The former "shrimp capital of the world" is also on the coast, so locals like to enjoy various water activities.
